Guardian iPad app on the way, and new iPhone subscription charge

The new improved iPhone app will boast a landscape reading view, fresh video content (award-winning video, no less), live football scores and the ability to view reader comments. There’s one final change, and that’s the pricing, with a new subscription model being introduced.

The Guardian has revealed that it’s about to update its iPhone app, and also release an app for the iPad.

The Guardian iPhone app will cost £2.99 for six months, and £3.99 for twelve months, so for a full year it’s 33p per month which isn’t likely to break the bank. In the States, there’ll be a free ad-supported version.

The iPad app is currently under development, with more details to be revealed shortly. All the Guardian is saying at the moment is: “We’re still working through the final features but, as always, we’re aiming high and hoping to steal a march on the current news-oriented iPad apps already available.”

Asus U36 Ultra portable Notebook

Asus is going to release its U36 ultra portable notebook. One of the models, the U36JC-131A460M is now available in Taiwan. The model is boosted by Intel Core i5-460M 2.53GHz processor, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics card with 1GB memory. It comes with a 500GB hard drive and a multi-in-1 card reader.

The Asus U36 has a 13.3-inch 1366×768 LCD display and offers HDMI output. The notebook supports Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi and has one USB 3.0 connector. Asus will release the U36 series in the US with a starting price of $999.

3D Android superphone by HTC

It is reported that HTC is going to unveil a 3D Android superphone. It is expected to happen in Christmas time of 2011.

It should be mentioned that 3D smartphone screens were showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2010. The majority of them were manufactured by chipmakers and it does not look like they will be seen on mobile devices.
.But it looks like HTC will soon change the situation and will reveal 3D displays at MWC 2011 which will be held in February.

Also it is suggested by HTC insiders that we will be able to see a 3D Android device in 2011. Also the manufacturer is planning to go beyond software and will apply 3D to all aspects of touchscreen technology.
It became known that HTC is looking for successful candidates who are familiar with 3D displays as well as imaging technologies.

Apart from HTC it is rumored that Motorola is going to develop 3D displays for high-end smartphones.

‘Speak’ Foreign Languages with Google Translate

You use the free Google Translate service to instantly translate text from one language to another and in some language pairs, you may even listen to the translated text by clicking the blue speaker icon as show in the the above screenshot.

In theory, such a feature may come handy in situations when the person on the other side of the phone doesn’t understand your language. You can type the text in your native language, hit translate and play the translated text as audio (example) over the phone.

But will this thing really work?

As part of Demo Slam, these two girls decided to call an Indian restaurant and placed the entire order in Hindi using the “text to speech” feature of Google Translate.

They typed their responses in English in the Google Translate box and played the translated Hindi version to the order taker. After some waiting, the ordered food was at their doorstep.

Now Tweet directly from your Webcam

Now you can directly tweet your videos live from your Webcam on your computer.You just need to use your Twitter username and password, and hit the Webcam Capture. Simple!

The service is now available on the two rival sites:TwitVid.com and TwitVid.io

Both of them have been racing to bring the service first on their platform, which allowed tweeting of only recorder videos so far. Reports indicate that TwitVid.com finally managed to win the race.

TwitVid.com and TwitVid.io have added the functionality of providing APIs that let other sites integrate into their services, thus helping them with distribution. TwitVid.com is also going to start support for the real-time streaming very soon.

The fight between the two rivals is beginning to get pretty serious. More than just names, the services too are confusingly similar.

And as always, the “real” winners in any such competition are the end users. So, let’s sit back and enjoy the charm of the upcoming new features on these sites, while they can continue to compete amongst themselves!

Make great looking web photo albums using Thumb Studio

Are you tired of Facebook, MySpace, and Flickr’s photo galleries? If you have your own web space hosted somewhere then making your own web photo album is a good alternative to those popular yet design-restricted web services. I found a tool that will turn your photos into great looking photo albums.

The best part is that this is free, unlike the ones from Adobe. The software is from ArcLab (their homepage is http://www.arclab.com/) and it is called ArcLab Thumb Studio. I think it is named Thumb Studio because it can create photo albums with thumbnails on it.
The software is about 10MB in size and is a breeze to install. Once you open the tool it lets you choose from predefined templates. To start making a photo album site, click the Project Selection tab then choose from any of the templates on the tree view at the left side. The preview will appear on the right side of the tool.

After selecting a template, click the next button at the lower right corner to set the image settings. This tab lets you set advanced settings of image quality, I just leave these parameters alone. The next tab is called the “Project Settings” – it contains the properties of your chosen template. Here you will see the colors and fonts used and caption settings. I usually leave this alone too since I want to retain the look of my chosen template.
Click the Image and Album selection tab to add images to your project. Use the add and remove buttons on the Image panel to add or remove images.
On the next tab, enter the title of the page then click create to start creating the output files:
That’s it. The process of creating the web files is quick – only a few seconds. The next tab will let you FTP your files to your web server or you can explore the output files locally so you can test them from your PC’s browser.

If you chose to explore the files, open the file with 0000.htm at the end. This is the first file.

You should see your browser open with that page displayed.

Isn’t this a fun way to make online photo albums with a few key and mouse strokes? The best part of this is that the software is free! I am highly recommending this for folks who want to share their pictures using their own web hosting.

Get the Classic Start Menu in Windows 7

If you love the Classic Start Menu in Windows XP and have been using it in Vista, chances are you’ll probably be disappointed by the lack of an option to enable classic Start menu in Windows 7. Microsoft hasn’t provided a way to turn on classic start menu in Windows 7, but users who are already missing it have started finding workarounds to enable it.

Thankfully, a user from Seven Forums created a nice little app that can bring the classic Start menu back in Windows 7. All you need to do is download the CSMenu app, launch it and voila - you’ll get the XP-like classic start menu in Windows 7.

The CSMenu app isn’t perfect though - it does have is rough edges. But it’s worth a try.

A Strategy to Multiply Your Online Content

I love blogging, but if you’re anything like me, then you find it hard to really grow your blog quickly. One of the main challenges is to be able to add new content to your blog on a consistent basis.

Lately, however, I found a very efficient technique that can be used for this purpose.Basically it takes one piece of content and turns it into three. You distribute it through the three major avenues of content consumption; textual, audio, and video.

How It Works

Step 1: Twenty Minute Live Ustream Show

I’ve found that my readers love jumping on a live video with me over at Ustream. It’s so much more interactive and for me it’s great because it’s easier then writing. I just come up with a topic related to what I blog about and then talk about it for twenty minutes.
Then during the show they can ask whatever questions they want in the chat box. Which I make sure to answer as I’m going about talking about our topic. The whole time though I’ve got my other computer (or a handheld, a digital recorder) recording my audio during the live stream.

Step 2: Turn Your Audio Into A Podcast
Once you’ve captured that audio from your live stream it’s pretty easy to submit it to any or all of the podcast directories. Then once you have an RSS stream for your audio you can submit to iTunes.
Now if you keep this system consistent people will start to follow along. For example I make sure to do my live stream every Tuesday. Once people know they can count on you to be there they’ll start taking the time out of their day to schedule in your shows.
At this point you’ve now got a weekly live stream and a weekly podcast. Now you just get that audio transcribed and you’ve got an extra blog post.

Step 3: Transcribe Audio Into Article

I have full time writers on staff, but before that I used to use Scriptlance.com or CastingWords.com to get my audio transcribed. It doesn’t cost much if the audio isn’t too long, and there are lots of ways to use that article once you have it in print.
You can turn those transcribed articles into articles that you submit to article directories, blog posts on your blog, Squidoo lenses, or an email newsletter.
Now you’ve got three content streams out there for people to start picking you up. You’ve really not done much more work either but now you can take advantage of multiple content distribution platforms. Not only do you increase your exposure but now your brand is getting bigger too.

When you brand gets bigger more people tend to start subscribing to hear what you have to say, because branding is credibility.

I don’t have enough time to get into everything you can do with all this new content, but if you get creative there is much more. For example downloading your Ustream videos and then uploading them to video sharing sites. Or now that you have multiple streams of content you can pull in more advertisers for each new content stream… And everyone lies “mo money!”

How to change the default media player in Windows

So I have Windows XP and one thing that I don’t like is the fact that Windows Media Player is setup as the default media player for my music, videos, etc. I prefer to use other media players like GOM player or VLC media player to play my media.

VLC Media Player has many of the most popular codecs already built into the program, so you can watch practically any video file without having to download a codec pack. You can easily change the default media player in Windows XP by following these steps:

Step 1: Go to the folder where the file you want to play is stored. Now right-click on the file and choose Open With and then click on Choose Program.

Step 2: Now select the program you want to use to open the media file and make sure to check the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file box.
Windows also has a feature under the Add/Remove Programs dialog that lets you set program access and defaults.
You can normally set the default web browser here to something other than Internet Explorer, but it does not give you the option to choose another media player, like VLC or GOM. It lets you choose the “current media player”, but does not let you change the default media player for all files types.

You basically have to manually right-click on each file type and choose to open that file type with another media player. Annoying, but the only thing that can be done. If you know of any other way, post a comment! Enjoy!

How to use Symantec AntiVirus Liveupdate

I use Symantec Antivirus as my primary virus protection software. Like any other antivirus tool it depends on it’s virus definitions database to be able to recognize virus signatures that sneaks up on my computer.

In this post I will show you how to use the LiveUpdate window to update Symantec’s virus definition files.

To access live Update open the Symantec Antivirus window and look for the LiveUpdate button at the lower right portion of the screen.

Before clicking the button first notice the date of the version of the virus definitions file. This way you will see if your definitions file is old or recent. The older this date, the more urgent that you need to update.

Click the LiveUpdate button to open the LiveUpdate wizard. Click Next to begin downloading:

Wait for the download to finish. That’s it! In some cases you will need to download up to 40MB of files if your virus definition files is really old.

Be patient with it, your antivirus software is only as good as it’s virus definition updates. The download time could take a few minutes to an hour depending on your Internet bandwidth.

By default LiveUpdate automatically downloads the virus definitions from the Symantec server. In some cases, like when I didn’t connect my computer in the Internet for a very long time, I needed to trigger the LiveUpdate manually.

How to install Windows 7 ISO

Are you a curious beginner PC user who wants to try the release candidate of Windows 7? A release candidate is like a pre-production version so users can checkout a piece of software before it gets released officially. In this post I will show you where to get the installer and how to burn the ISO onto a bootable DVD. The latest Windows 7 RC is downloadable from Microsoft.

Here are things that you need to understand first before you install Windows 7 or a new OS for that matter.

1. You will loose your data if you reformat during installation. Backup everything that you want to retain.

2. This is not yet an official production version. Your PC might hang and it might not be that stable on some machines. Expect to have some instability issues as you use it.

3. This is only a trial software and will expire on June 1, 2010.

According to the site, here are the minimum specs for a system to run Windows 7:

- 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor or higher
- 1 GB of system memory or more
- 16 GB of available disk space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
- DVD-R/W Drive

If your computer have the above requirements then follow the steps below.

Step 1. Download the software from Microsoft. If you have a newer 64 bit processor, try to download the 64bit version of Windows 7. I tried a 32bit version on my 64bit AMD 64 X2 and it worked. I am yet to try the 64 bit version.

Step 2. Once you get the ISO file, burn it using a DVD ROM burner software like Nero. Open Nero Burning ROM, open the ISO file and then burn to your blank DVD.

Step 3: Boot your PC using this burned DVD. You may need to change boot order in the BIOS to CD-ROM in order to run the installer during reboot.
Step 4: Check the disc by double clicking the setup.exe file. You should see an installation window like below.

That’s it! This should get you going with trying out a Windows 7 setup. Remember that this is only a release candidate so it is strongly suggested to not use this on a primary computer. You can also read my post on how to install Windows 7 on VirtualBox.

Preview Zip Files Before Downloading With ArchView

If you want to preview the contents of a .zip file before downloading in Firefox,I found the right joice for to do it .All you need is to install ArchView.

Once you’ve installed the ArchView addon, a small icon appears in the status bar. When you click on a link to a zip file, Archview will display the individual files and folders present in the .zip archive. You can then download individual items from that .zip file.
Besides just supporting the .zip format, ArchView also supports .iso and .rar formats.

Post to Your Blog from Microsoft Office Word 2007

While browsing around the menus in Office Word 2007, I stumbled upon the ‘Publish’ option, and I was thrilled! Well, it’s actually possible to publish to your WordPress blog from Microsoft Word 2007 itself. That is so cool! And it’s not just WordPress, supported platforms include Blogger, SharePoint, Windows Live Spaces, TypePad, etc.

Here’s a quick guide on how you can set up Microsoft Word 07 to publish posts to your blog:

Start MS Word 2007, click on the Office Logo on the top left of the screen and select ‘New‘.
Click ‘New Blog Post‘ and click ‘Create’.
Click ‘Register Now‘ in the dialog that appears to get started.

Choose your provider. I chose WordPress.

Click ‘Next’ and type in your blog URL, username and password

Click the button ‘Picture Options’ which is present in the bottom left of the dialog

If you want to upload photos to your own FTP server, choose the option ‘My own Server‘

In Upload URL, type in the FTP address of the location where the images should be uploaded

In Source URL, type in the HTTP address of the location where the images are stored

Press OK and when all’s well you’ll get a confirmation message telling the process was successful.

You can now write blog posts in Word 2007 itself, specify categories and publish them using the button on the top left.

Threeter - The Quickest Way To Post Messages To Twitter?

Threeter is a desktop application for Windows that lets you post tweets at the press of a hotkey. Once you install the Threeter software, just configure your account and set a hotkey combination.

After you’ve configured the app, just press the hotkey and a translucent window pops up top of all other windows. You can type your status message here and press ‘Enter’ to tweet it to your account.

I guess this is probably the quickest way to post messages to Twitter from Windows (other than TwitterBar for Firefox I guess). What do you think?

Facebook Prepares To Launch Live Video Chat Product

Want to call your Facebook friends via video chat? Soon enough you’ll be able to. Earlier today one of our readers sent us a link to one of Facebook’s cached JavaScript files which reveals a number of clues as to a soon to be released video chat service.

There’s no way to mistake the code which is still currently accessible. There are actual notification messages including “Waiting for your friend…”, “Video call denied.”, “Incoming call:”, and “Loading video call…”

The code pretty obviously implies that Facebook is preparing to launch a video chat service. So why would Facebook be focused on launching a video chat service? To keep users on the site longer of course!

Additionally, Facebook can increasingly become a central hub of communication for many of its users. What’s interesting about these new features is that they compete directly with the features within Google’s Gmail product.

The only thing Facebook is missing now is an improved messaging system. Facebook’s messaging system is pretty horrible currently. As of now, navigating and archiving messages is not easy.

Filtering messages is also extremely challenging. One thing that Facebook’s messaging service has above others is the ability to integrate applications as attachments.

While Facebook may not be the primary communication channel for adults, younger users have been using the site as the primary way for getting in touch with friends. In other words: email is dying.

Not only will Facebook take on Google when it comes to video chat but they’ll also be competing against other web based video chat providers such as TokBox.

With all of these communication tools it’s clear that Facebook wants to become the central hub of communication on the web for its many users. The addition of video chat emphasizes this focus.

Earlier this week Facebook upgraded their messaging system to take advantage of friend list filters and it appears that there will soon be a video component as well.

Whether or not this will be integrated into the existing chat system is unknown but it’s clear a live video messaging service is in the works at Facebook.
